Ester Pearl Watson found the inspiration for her self-published, beloved, mini-comic in an unlikely place -- a gas station restroom. What Watson found glowing in the cave of a stall is what some would consider the holy grail of youth -- a teenage girl's diary. The entries in this journal became the source material and inspiration for Unlovable, in which Watson illustrates records of a youth's daily life in a primitive but affectionate style that is reminiscent of a rushed and awkward high school student. Tales of nose-picking, ridiculous 80s fashion, hair trends and the sneers of backstabbing best friends remind us of the hilarious "growing-up years." Watson and her husband, illustrator Mark Todd were so taken with the found journal bathroom that they were married at that very same rest stop.

Okay, that's not true but only because Mark Todd would have no part of it. This is the kind of levelheaded thinking you get from the man behind the mini comic book Bad-Asses, a book illustrating the baddest of the bad in pop culture. You know Todd has fine taste when he includes drawings of Clint Eastwood, Snake Plissken, Skeletor and a DeLorean in his collection of asses.

Though you might not think it, Todd and Watson do agree on one thing and that is the importance of DIY zine production. So much so that they creation the definitive how to book on the subject: Whatcha Mean What's A 'Zine?
